An overview of the features of a forklift
Forklifts can be used in many ways. This blog is for those who just started to learn material handling and want to refresh their knowledge about forklifts.
Let's begin with the exterior and structural elements.
Mast
The mast is the vertical support which lifts and lowers the load. It's sometimes called the 'upright. Hydraulic pistons move a carriage attached to the mast.
Transport
A carriage is a support structure that permits forks to be attached or mounted. It's the platform that allows forks mount or attach to the mast.
Back Rest
It protects the mast's pipes from damage and prevents items falling through the mast and hitting the operator. It attaches on the carriage and stops loads from moving backwards.
Fork
These forks can be used during transport to contact a load. To transport a load, these forks can attach to the carriage.
Lift Cylinder
The lift cylinder controls lifting and lowering the carriage and forks. Hydraulic lift cylinders can only move one way and are powered by hydraulics.
Operator Cab
This is the area where an operator can rest while using a lift. This area can be enclosed or open depending on its purpose.
Overhead guard
The overhead protection is the framework or roof of the forklift. The overhead guard is an important safety device that protects operators from injury.
Tilt Cylinder
The tilt cylinder functions in the same manner as the lift-cylinder, but controls tilt movement relative to the ground. The tilt cylinder controls tilt movement in an adjustable forklift.
Get behind the wheel:
These are the wheels located in front of the machine. These are the wheels that drive the machine.
Steering wheels
These wheels are usually smaller than the drive wheels and located behind the lift. These wheels direct the forklift's movement in a particular direction.
Weight Counter
To balance the equipment's load, this is an added weight. This makes the machine more stable for lifting and traveling.
Rating Plate
This rating plate indicates how heavy a forklift can lift. You need to know the weight of your equipment in order to ensure safe operation.

Brake pedal
Two types of brake pedals are available for lift trucks. There are two types of brake pedals available for lift trucks: the inching brake and the traditional brake pedal.
Inching Brake pedal
On the left side of the steering column is the inching brake pedal. It works in the same way as a clutch pedal. To activate the brake, press down on the pedal.
Accelerate by pedaling:
It can be found on the right side just below the steering column.
Forward Reverse lever: This lever is used to change the direction. To move in any direction, push the lever forward. Push the lever through neutral to reverse the direction.
You can select different gear ratios with the Gear Shift lever. The transmission will move forward when the Gear Shift lever moves.
The Lift Lever This lever can be used to raise or lower forks. Pull backwards for lift, push forwards for lower.
Tilt lever You can tilt the mast in any direction by using the tilt lever. Push forward to tilt the mast in any direction. Pull backward to tilt the mast in the other direction. The lever can be moved to adjust the engine speed.

Sideshifters These enable forks and loads to move in line. These reduce the time and cost of truck repositioning.
Fork Positioners – Fork positions enable forks to move hydraulically closer and further apart. Operators don't have to manually adjust the equipment.
Carton Clamps are able to transport large rectangular boxes with no need for a pallet. To save space and lower shipping costs, pallets can be transported.
This single-double pallet handler is ideal for transporting lots of products. This attachment can transport either one or two pallets depending on its location.
